Oops, sorry for the delay, the chicken feeding took longer than expected.. alright, folks, here it is, your once again, RANDOM MOVIE OF THE WEEK! Yes, we're back to being random (for the while anyways), as I don't know, I figure this was getting the exact same response when i wasn't doing random.. So, I'll flip flop... (Just like, oops, never mind)
SO! THE NUMBER RANDOM.ORG HAS CHOSEN IS..
223!
So the movie of the week is...
THE DEW LINE STORY!!! More commie propaganda!
Interesting choice, I'd like to hear people's opinion of it, whether they've actually heard of this before they watched the film (I certainly didn't)

Re: MOVIE OF THE WEEK! Do The DEW!! |
Interesting choice of film. I had seen this there, but hadn't gotten around to watching it. I've heard of the DEW line sites, but I have an advantage there - my father, while he never worked on the DEW line, did work on another line of radar sites called the Pinetree line. They were a joint USAF - RCAF project that extended across Alaska and Canada. Pretty much the same thing, but further south.
Dad was stationed at Resolution Island, NWT and Goose Bay, Laborador, duty that, as he would have put it, made Wisconsin seem like the tropics.

Watching out for Commies |
One thing I havent asked about this, is that did they in fact GET to report anything? Any commies infiltrating our airspace? Things from another planet? (calling Kurt Russell!)
Is it still being used today?

Re: Watching out for Commies |
The DEW line was cancelled in 1985. However, the cleanup is just starting and it seems Canada is going alone with the job. The area is laden with PCBs.

Re: Watching out for Commies |
Dad was in the telephone communications part of it so he didn't see the radar much, but the "Scope Dopes" (his phrase) used to tell him they saw UFO's all the time. These were bored people on a remote, isolated base, so you can take that statement for what it's worth. I don't recall him mentioning any Soviet bombers coming across, though. Wish he were around to ask...

Re: Watching out for Commies |
Just another note on this, then I'll shut up.
Back in the cold war days, the US used to send recon aircraft loaded with radar detection equipment into Soviet airspace, trying to get them to turn on their radar detection systems. The planes would then record frequencies and any other information, and get out. Some of the planes were shot down. It wouldn't suprise me if the Soviet Union did the same thing.

Re: Watching out for Commies |
The Russians used to recon and test the DEW Line regularly. And, not just from the air, but also by land.
Don't know if anyone will see this as this thread has been dormant for 7 years. My unlce was one of the guys whose job it was to detect & interdict their efforts. The goal of the "recon" missions were to test defenses for the eventuallity of a Soviet First Strike.
The idea was that a First Strike would be preceded by soviet Speicial Forces infiltrating and destroying portions of the early warning systems. With the US unable to confirm an incoming missle attack, the Soviets hope would be that the US was unable or unwilling to launch, until after their first strike, severely limited our ability to respond.
I was in a business meeting with the CEO of a company that was a retired Colonel who introduced me to a new memeberof his staff, a retired Army Officer. To make a complicated story short, it turned out that this retired offcer knew my uncle, and had been trained by him in the arctic for just such missions in the mid 70's.
Upon confronting my uncle with this story, as he led us all to believe he left the military in 1969 or 70 after Vietnam service, he confirmed the story. He led the entire family to believe he was a shiftlewss bum for over 10 years. I remember as a child the dozens of jobs he had for 4-6 weekas at a time, as a grocery bagger at the Giant Genie or as a clerk at a 7-11 store. He would always just disappear one day, or even tell us he was going mountain climbling, or on a kiyaking trip with buddies and not hear from him again for 8-10 weeks.
Appearently, he wasn't exactly still in the Army. After, confirming the above story, I also told him that was what the other guy had told me, but that I also got the feeling that there was more that hadn't been told. Like that if they were interdicting these guys, then he was probably chasing them back into Siberia and doing the same thing to the Soviets. He smiled and didn't say anything more about that, but that really said it all anyway.
